The Cane Corso is an Italian Mastiff. The word “cane” is Latin for dog and the word “corso” relates to the Latin cohors, ”guardian”. They are a powerful, muscular, large breed, that is said to be the descendants of the Roman war dogs. They have short coats that come in black, gray, fawn, red, or brindle. Solid fawn and red dogs may have black or gray masks. The ears may be cropped or uncropped. The breed became so rare that they were almost extinct. Enthusiasts were able to revive the breed in the 1980’s. The Society Amatori Cane Corso was formed in 1983, and the Federation Cynologique Internationaled recognized the breed in 1996. Michael Sottile is credited in having brought the first litter of Cane Corosos to the United States in 1988. The International Cane Corso Association was created in 1993 and the breed received recognition from the American Kennel Club in 2010.
This breed does best when they have a job to do or are worked. They are highly intelligent and were originally developed to help out on farms, guard property, and help hunt large game so making sure they are worked is important. If they aren’t “worked” they will find something to do with that boredom and pent-up energy. This often leads to destructive or unwanted behavior such as digging holes, chewing up furniture or anything else they can get their teeth on, and running the fence and barking.
